Chin projection
Chin projection is how far the chin sits forward relative to the lips and nose, seen in profile. A chin behind the lips reads recessed or weak; level or ahead reads strong. The bone is structural. What moves in a photo is posture, under-chin fat and beard, and BecomeTen reports the bone as a band and never recommends genioplasty.

What is chin projection?
In profile, imagine a vertical line dropped from the base of the nose past the lips. A chin that reaches it reads balanced; well behind it reads recessed; past it reads strong. The chin is the front of the mandible, so projection is a question of how that bone grew and how far forward the lower jaw sits, the same question the gonial angle and ramus pages answer for the back of the jaw. Forums use "weak chin" as a verdict. It is a description of one bone dimension, and one that is invisible from the front.
What a photo can and cannot show
Projection is a profile measurement, and BecomeTen rates from a frontal photo, so it cannot see it directly. What a frontal photo can show is the width and height of the chin, how clearly the jaw edge separates from the neck, and whether the lower face reads as one soft shape or a defined one. That is enough for a band on chin and jaw definition, which is why the report never gives a projection figure.
The bigger point is posture. Push the head forward and drop the chin, the way people do looking down at a phone, and the tissue under the jaw folds, the chin tucks back and the lower face reads recessed. Lift the head, ears over the shoulders, chin level, and the same jaw reads a full band better. That swing is larger than the difference in chin bone between most adults, and it is entirely posture and camera height. A chin that reads recessed only when the camera is above you or your head is forward is telling you about the photo.
Is chin projection workable or structural?
The bone is structural. Nothing non-surgical moves the front of the mandible forward, not mewing, chewing, posture drills or jaw devices, and BecomeTen tags it structural and reports it as a band. Genioplasty and chin implants exist; BecomeTen does not recommend surgery at any tier and never suggests a surgeon. What is workable is what sits around the bone and decides whether it is visible: the fat under the chin and the hair on it. They are why the jaw and chin cap is +14 despite the bone being fixed.
What actually changes how chin projection reads?
- Submental fat. Fat under the chin blurs the line between chin and neck, so a chin with ordinary projection reads recessed. Reducing it, which only happens with overall body fat, is the biggest workable lever on the whole jaw. See submental fat.
- Beard. A beard with a firm, slightly forward edge under the chin adds apparent projection without touching bone, and works on a lean face too. Trim it flat and high and the effect disappears.
- Posture and camera height. Head level, chin slightly forward, lens at eye level. A lens above eye level shortens the chin. This is the honest photo, not a trick, as long as it is the same every time.
- Lighting. Light from above puts a shadow under the chin edge that defines it; flat light removes the edge.

Questions
Can posture make a recessed chin look normal in a photo?
Often, yes, and it is not cheating if you do it every time. Head forward and chin down folds the tissue under the jaw and tucks the chin back; head level with ears over the shoulders lets the chin sit where the bone puts it. The gap between those two positions is larger than the gap in chin bone between most adults.
Does a beard add real chin projection?
It adds apparent projection, which is what a photo and an observer see. A beard with a firm lower edge shaped slightly forward of the chin extends the silhouette of the lower face; the bone is unchanged. Trimming it flat or too high removes the effect. On a lean face it is the one chin lever left.
Why is chin projection tagged structural if the jaw cap is +14?
Because the cap is about what surrounds the bone, not the bone. Under-chin fat, beard, posture and lighting change how the chin reads by more than most anatomy differs, and all of them are workable. The front of the mandible is fixed without surgery, so BecomeTen reports it as a band and keeps it out of the plan.
Will BecomeTen tell me if I need a chin implant?
No. BecomeTen does not recommend genioplasty, implants or any procedure at any tier, and a rating from a single frontal photo is no basis for surgical advice. The report tags the bone structural, reports it as a band, and points the plan at fat, beard and capture, where the workable margin is.
