Mandible
The mandible is the lower jaw: the horseshoe of bone that carries the lower teeth, turns at the gonial angle into the ramus and ends at the chin. A photo shows the soft-tissue outline over it, not the bone, so body fat, posture, beard and camera height dominate how the jawline reads. The bone is structural; the outline is workable.

What is the mandible?
The mandible is the only large bone in the face that moves. Seen from the front it is a horseshoe; seen from the side it is an L. The horizontal part is the body, which carries the lower teeth and runs from the chin back along the jawline. At the back corner it turns upward: that corner is the gonial angle, and the vertical part rising from it to the joint under the ear is the ramus. At the front, the two halves meet at the chin, whose forward position is what chin projection describes. When forums say jawline they mean the visible edge of the body and the angle.
What a photo can and cannot show
A photo shows an outline: the line where the lower face meets the neck, how sharply it turns at the back, how far the chin sits forward. It does not show the bone. Between the mandible and the camera sit skin, a layer of fat that thickens and thins with body weight, the masseter, the platysma in the neck and, for many men, hair. The same bone reads as a crisp jawline at a lean body composition and as a soft, rounded lower face at a higher one. So BecomeTen reports jaw traits as bands with a capture grade, never as a width or an angle, as the methodology requires. A photo cannot say how wide the bone is; it can say how defined the outline reads today.
Is the mandible workable or structural?
The bone is structural. Its width, the ramus height, the angle and the chin's forward position were set by growth, and no adult routine moves them. The outline over the bone is workable, which is why the jaw and chin area carries one of the largest non-surgical ceilings in the report: body fat, posture, grooming and the photo can move it from soft to defined without the mandible changing at all.
What actually changes how the mandible reads?
- Body fat. The biggest lever. A 2010 study found raters read weight from the shape of the lower face, and a 2009 paper on facial adiposity found the fullness of the face is a cue people use for health. - Posture. A head pushed forward bunches the skin under the chin and blurs the line; a neutral neck with the chin level lets the angle show. The free lever, and the one most selfies get wrong.
- Beard. Stubble or a short beard draws a sharper edge along the body and squares the angle. It is presentation, reversible, and the report credits the outline rather than the bone.
- Camera height and lens. Eye level, at least an arm's length away. A phone below the chin makes any mandible read heavier and shorter; a wide lens close up bends the outline. Submental fat fills the corner between jaw and neck and is the last to leave.

Questions
Can the mandible still grow in adults?
Not in any way a routine can drive. Facial growth finishes in the late teens to early twenties, and after that the mandible changes only slowly with age and tooth loss. Chewing, tongue posture and devices do not add bone. BecomeTen tags the bone structural and puts the effort into the outline.
Why does my mandible look wider in some photos?
Because the camera, not the bone, moved. A lens below eye level enlarges the lower face, a wide lens close up bends the outline, and a head tilted down shortens the chin. Beard length and water retention add their own swing. Shoot at eye level, an arm's length away, chin level, and the band settles.
Does a beard change how BecomeTen rates the mandible?
It changes the outline band, because the model rates what it can see and a short beard draws a sharper edge. The bone tags stay structural and unchanged. The report labels the beard as presentation rather than crediting the jaw, so a clean-shaven re-scan is not a surprise.
