Philtrum length
The philtrum is the groove between the base of the nose and the upper lip; its length is the vertical distance between the two. Forums call a short philtrum youthful and a long one ageing. It is soft tissue over bone and is structural in adults. Expression and lip fullness change how it reads. BecomeTen reports a directional band.

What is philtrum length?
The philtrum is the vertical groove with two ridges that runs from the subnasale, where the nose meets the face, down to the red border of the upper lip. Forums turn its length into a ratio against chin height, and BecomeTen rates it the same way, as the philtrum ratio inside harmony, because the philtrum only means something next to the chin below it. A short philtrum with a tall chin reads youthful; a long philtrum with a short chin reads older.
What a photo can and cannot show
This is not a measurement you can take from a selfie, and BecomeTen does not pretend to. The two landmarks are soft: the subnasale disappears when the lens is below the nose, and the lip border moves with every expression. Is philtrum length workable or structural?

What actually changes how the philtrum reads?
- Expression. A neutral, closed mouth is the honest baseline. Smiling shortens the read; a slack, open mouth lengthens it.
- Lip fullness. A fuller upper lip raises the red border and shortens the apparent philtrum.
- Facial hair. A moustache hides the philtrum entirely and redraws the lower third. It is the one grooming lever that fully changes this read, with no studies behind it.
- Camera pitch. A lens below eye level lengthens the philtrum on camera; above eye level shortens it.
- Chin. Submental fullness that blurs the chin makes the philtrum read longer by comparison.
Questions
Does a long philtrum make me look older?
It can, because the upper lip genuinely lengthens with age and the eye has learned the association. A long philtrum on a young face is still read as a young face; skin, eyes and hair carry far more age information than one distance. Can a moustache hide a long philtrum?

Can I measure my philtrum with a ruler and compare it to a ratio online?
