Facial thirds

Facial thirds divide the face vertically into three bands: hairline to glabella, glabella to subnasale, and subnasale to menton. The classical ideal calls them roughly equal; real faces rarely are. The bones set them, so they are structural. Hair framing and camera angle change how they read. BecomeTen reports a directional band, never millimetres.

What are facial thirds?

The thirds are a drawing convention that facial analysis borrowed. Four landmarks split the face top to bottom, and the three gaps between them are the thirds. The middle third is what the midface ratio zooms in on; the lower third is split again by philtrum length and chin height.

What a photo can and cannot show

A straight-on photo at eye level shows which third dominates. It cannot show by how much. The top landmark is the least reliable: a hairline is a soft edge that recedes, is shaved or hides under a fringe, so the upper third is often unreadable. Pitch does the rest: a camera above eye level compresses the lower third, a camera below it stretches chin and nose. Why BecomeTen never states thirds in millimetres

There is no ruler in a selfie. Without a known object in the frame there is no scale, and perspective puts the nose closer to the lens than the hairline. The landmarks are judgement calls: where a hairline starts, where a chin ends under a beard. A millimetre figure would carry a confidence the input cannot support; the methodology calls that false precision and forbids it.

Are facial thirds workable or structural?

Structural. The frontal bone, maxilla and mandible fix the thirds in an adult, which is why harmony has the smallest potential ceiling of the five areas. Two soft edges still move the reading: the hairline and the fat under the chin. A receding hairline lengthens the apparent upper third; prescription options are covered in hairline, density, minoxidil and finasteride.

What actually changes how the thirds read?

  • Hair framing. A fringe shortens the upper third; a swept-back style or a receded hairline lengthens it.
  • Beard. A beard extends the visual chin and can make a short lower third read balanced, or a long one read longer.
  • Camera pitch. The biggest distortion. The photo quality guide shows the eye-level rule.
  • Body fat. Fullness under the chin blurs the menton and makes the lower third read heavier.

Questions

Does a long lower third mean I should grow a beard?

Not automatically. A beard adds to the visual chin, so it lengthens a lower third that already reads long. Where a beard helps is the opposite case: a short or weak lower third, or a soft jaw corner that a trimmed edge can draw in. The report says which case you are.

Can a receding hairline change my facial thirds?

In appearance, yes. The upper third starts at the hairline, so recession lengthens it and the forehead dominates the read. Bone has not changed. The workable part is the hairline itself: minoxidil and finasteride have randomized-trial evidence for androgenetic hair loss, and both need a doctor.

Do equal thirds mean an attractive face?

No. Equal thirds is a drawing rule, and faces rated highly in perception research vary around it. Many high-scoring faces have a slightly short upper or lower third. BecomeTen notes a strongly unequal third because it is noticeable, not because a canon says it is wrong.
