Answer · Jaw & chin
Which face shape has the sharpest jawline?
The square face, by definition: its jaw is about as wide as the forehead and meets the chin at a clear angle. Oblong faces often share that angle on a longer face. Round faces have the softest jaw. But face shape is a label for proportions, and body fat decides how sharp any jaw looks.

Explore jaw & chinHow the six shapes compare at the jaw
| Face shape | Typical jaw |
|---|---|
| Square | Wide and angular; the corner is the defining feature |
| Oblong | Often angular, on a face longer than it is wide |
| Diamond | Narrow, tapering to a pointed chin; cheekbones are widest |
| Heart | Narrow below a wide forehead; small, often pointed chin |
| Oval | Slightly narrower than the cheekbones, gently rounded |
| Round | Soft, with the jaw meeting the chin in a curve |
Diamond and heart faces can look sharp too, but at the chin rather than the corner of the jaw. Forums tend to mean the corner, the gonial angle, when they say sharp. Most faces sit between two shapes, so treat the label as a category rather than a verdict on your jaw.
Why the label is not the whole answer
Face shape is decided by widths and length: forehead against jaw, face width against face length, and whether the jaw meets the chin in a curve, a corner or a point. Body fat moves all of those. Fuller cheeks and fat along the jaw can push a square face toward round; getting leaner can push a round face toward square or oval. So the same skull can carry two different labels at two different weights. The bone under the label is largely inherited, as is the gonial angle genetic explains, but how much of it shows is workable.
How to check yours
Run the free face shape tool on a straight-on photo with hair pulled back, then the jawline test on the same photo to see how sharply the corner reads. If the corner is soft, how to make your jawline show lists what moves it. A beard can also square a jaw that is not square, which is styling convention rather than research: the square face guide shows how to keep an angular jaw from reading boxy.
