Answer · Jaw & chin
Is the gonial angle genetic?
Largely, yes. The gonial angle, the back corner of the jaw, is set by how the mandible grew, and genes steer that growth more than anything else. Childhood factors such as dental development play a smaller part. Once growth is finished it is bone, so adult routines do not change it, but fat, posture and beard change how it reads.
The outline and balance of the lower face.
Explore jaw & chinWhat decides the angle
The gonial angle is where the horizontal body of the mandible turns upward into the ramus. How closed or open it ends up depends on the direction the lower jaw grew through childhood and adolescence. Families tend to share jaw shapes, which is the everyday sign of how strongly inherited that growth pattern is. Hormones at puberty add sex-typical width, covered in does testosterone make your jaw bigger, and dental and orthodontic factors during growth can nudge the result. Those are questions for a dentist or orthodontist while a child is still growing, not something to work on as an adult.
In adults the angle changes only slowly, with ageing and tooth loss. No chewing, tongue posture or device closes it.
Genetic does not mean fixed in photos
The bone is inherited; the outline people see is not only bone. Between the angle and the camera sit fat, the masseter muscle, skin and often a beard. The same jaw shows a crisp corner at a lean body composition and almost none at a higher one. Head position matters as much: chin down and forward hides the corner in the neck, head level lets it show.
| Factor | Inherited bone? | Workable? |
|---|---|---|
| Angle of the mandible | Yes | No |
| Fat over the corner | No | Yes, the largest lever |
| Head and neck posture | No | Yes |
| Beard edge | No | Yes |
How to check yours
The free jawline test reads how sharply the corner turns from one front-facing photo and reports a band, not a number, because a photo cannot measure the angle. If the band reads soft, what a weak jawline looks like helps tell bone from fat, and how to make your jawline show lists the levers that work. BecomeTen does not recommend jaw surgery or implants.
