Orbital vector

The orbital vector is where the cheekbone and lower orbital rim sit relative to the front of the eye in profile. Rim ahead of the cornea is positive; behind it is negative. It is bone, so structural, and a frontal photo barely shows it. What reads in front view is under-eye hollowness and dark circles, which sleep and skin change.

What is the orbital vector?

Look at a face from the side and drop a vertical line from the front of the cornea. The orbital vector is where the lower rim of the eye socket and the upper cheek sit against that line. In front of it, the vector is positive: the eye sits supported with a full cheek beneath. Behind it, the vector is negative: the eye reads prominent and the cheek below it flat or hollow. The term comes from oculoplastic surgery, where it shapes how a lower-lid operation is planned. Forums borrowed it and tied it to hunter eyes, on the theory that a positive vector gives deep-set, shadowed eyes.

What a photo can and cannot show

A frontal photo barely shows the orbital vector at all. The relation is front-to-back, and the front view has no depth axis. What it does show is the consequence, or the look-alike: a shadow under the eye, a hollow between lower lid and cheek, a dark band of skin. Those can come from a negative vector, but they come just as readily from thin skin, pigmentation, fat loss, poor sleep or a light from above. A profile shows more, but it shows soft tissue over the rim, not the rim, and it cannot give a distance. Is the orbital vector workable or structural?

Structural. The rim and the cheekbone are bone, they were set by growth, and no routine, tape, massage or posture moves them. Where a scan can honestly read a strongly negative vector it tags it structural, the plan does not promise to change it and the potential image is forbidden from redrawing the orbit. This is the same rule the methodology applies to the maxilla and the zygomatic bones, which are the bone the vector is actually made of.

What actually reads in front view?

Hollowness and darkness under the eye. A 2009 review of infraorbital dark circles sorted the causes into overlapping groups: pigment in the skin, thin skin with vessels showing through, shadow cast by a hollow or a bulge, and swelling. Only the shadow group has anything to do with the bone, and even there body fat, age and the light decide most of what the camera sees. The rest is skin, and skin is workable.   • Sleep. A 2013 study photographed the same people rested and sleep-deprived and found the tired faces were rated as having darker circles, more swollen eyes and paler skin. Same bone, worse reading, and it reverses.
  • Hydration and salt. Puffiness under the eye after a salty evening or a short night is fluid, and it lifts within a day. The evidence for drinking more water changing the under-eye specifically is thin, and BecomeTen says so.
  • Body fat and lighting. Lower body fat thins the cheek under the rim and a padded hollow can appear; light from above manufactures the same hollow, and flat front light removes it.
  • Skin. Pigment and thin skin darken the band whatever the bone is doing, and they respond to sunscreen and routine over months.

Is a negative orbital vector the cause of my dark circles?

Possibly a part of it, but the 2009 review lists pigment, thin skin, vessels and swelling as causes alongside shadow, and a front-view photo cannot tell which you have. Most people have more than one. The skin causes are workable and the shadow one is mostly light and sleep, so start there before blaming the bone.

Can BecomeTen tell my orbital vector from a selfie?

Not reliably, and it does not pretend to. The vector is a front-to-back relation and a frontal photo has no depth. The report reads under-eye hollowness and darkness as bands, tags what is skin as workable, and only tags structure where the photo genuinely supports it. It never gives a distance.

Will tear-trough filler fix a negative orbital vector?

Filler adds volume in front of the rim; it does not move the rim, and BecomeTen does not recommend it at any tier. Its plans stop at what skin, sleep and habits can do, and the potential image never assumes a procedure. Whether to see a clinician about anything is a decision the report deliberately leaves alone.
