Hunter eyes

Hunter eyes is a forum term, not an anatomical one. It describes deep-set eyes with a positive canthal tilt, low-set straight brows and little visible upper eyelid. The orbital bone and brow ridge that produce the look are structural. Brow grooming, sleep, under-eye skin and body fat change how close a face reads to it. BecomeTen reports directional bands.

Also called: deep-set eyes, hooded eyes (forum use), positive tilt eyes

What are hunter eyes?

The term bundles several eye-area traits into one ideal: a positive canthal tilt, eyes set deep under a prominent brow ridge, brows that sit low and run straight rather than arched, minimal upper eyelid showing, and no white visible under the iris. Together they read as a narrowed, focused gaze. The report never scores "hunter eyes" as a thing; it scores the traits underneath, each as a band, because they split cleanly into bone and not-bone.

What a photo can and cannot show

Almost anyone can produce hunter eyes in a selfie. Chin down, eyes up toward a camera held slightly above eye level, brows pulled down: the lids hood, the tilt appears positive, the gaze narrows. BecomeTen grades the capture, and a lowered chin with a raised gaze is flagged rather than rewarded. An eye-level, neutral photo shows the real thing, as bands, never measurements.

Are hunter eyes workable or structural?

Partly each. The depth of the socket, the brow ridge and the tilt of the outer corner are bone and ligament: structural and never in the plan. Brow shape, under-eye condition and the skin around the eye are workable, and they are where the eye area's potential ceiling comes from. Hunter-eye bone over a puffy, dark, tired under-eye reads worse than average bone over a rested one.

What actually changes how the eye area reads?

  • Brow grooming. Removing strays above the brow and keeping the tail from lifting makes a brow read lower and straighter. No studies, cheap, reversible.
  • Sleep. A study photographing the same people rested and sleep-deprived found the tired faces were judged to have more hanging eyelids, swollen eyes and darker circles.
  • Under-eye skin. A dermatology review describes infraorbital dark circles as multifactorial: pigmentation, vessels through thin skin, tear-trough shadow and fluid. Each has a different answer; see the under-eye guide.
  • Body fat. Fullness around the eyes and upper cheeks fills the socket and hides the brow ridge. A leaner composition lets the orbital rim show, which is most of what "deep-set" means on camera.

Questions

Are hunter eyes required for a high tier?

No. The eye area is a quarter of the overall score and hunter-eye traits are a subset of it. A rested, well-framed, symmetric eye area with a neutral tilt scores well. What holds most people back here is under-eye condition and brow grooming, both workable.

Does losing body fat make eyes look more deep-set?

Often, yes. Fat over the upper cheek and under the brow fills the orbit and hides the rim. At a leaner composition the rim casts a shadow and the eye appears to sit deeper. The bone has not moved; it is being uncovered.

What does BecomeTen rate instead of hunter eyes?

Seven eye-area traits, each as a band: canthal tilt, eye spacing, upper eyelid exposure, sclera show, under-eye condition, brow position and brow shape. Under-eye condition and brow shape are workable; the rest are structural. The label adds nothing to that, so the report leaves it out.
