Canthal tilt

Canthal tilt is the slope of the line between the inner and outer corners of the eye. Outer corner higher than inner is positive; level is neutral; lower is negative. It is set by the orbital bone and the lateral canthal ligament, so it is structural. BecomeTen reports it as a directional band, never a degree.

What is canthal tilt?

Draw a line from the inner corner of the eye (the medial canthus) to the outer corner (the lateral canthus). Outer corner higher: positive, and the eye reads upturned. Level: neutral. Outer corner lower: negative, and the eye reads downturned. The outer corner is anchored by the lateral canthal ligament to the rim of the orbit, and the skull decides where that rim sits. Forums treat a positive tilt as the defining feature of hunter eyes; the rating treats it as one of seven eye-area traits.

What a photo can and cannot show

A photo can show direction. It cannot show a degree. A slight roll of the head, a camera above or below eye level, or a lens close to the face each shift the apparent slope by more than most people's anatomy differs. Is canthal tilt workable or structural?

Structural. The ligament and the bone it attaches to do not move with exercise, massage, tape, posture or any routine. The eye area's potential ceiling comes from the workable traits around it: brow shape, under-eye condition and skin.

What actually changes how canthal tilt reads?

  • Brows. A brow tail that drops low over the outer corner makes a neutral eye read downturned. Tidying the tail is grooming with no studies behind it, and the cheapest lever here.
  • Under-eye puffiness. Swelling at the lower outer corner fills in the line and pulls the apparent slope down. See what is workable under the eye.
  • Sleep. A study photographing the same people rested and sleep-deprived found the tired faces were judged to have more hanging eyelids and swollen eyes. The eye reads flatter; the bone has not moved.
  • Photo angle. Chin down with the camera slightly above eye level makes eyes read more upturned; a camera below eye level does the opposite. Neither is your tilt.

Can I make my canthal tilt positive without surgery?

No. The outer corner is held by a ligament on bone, and nothing non-surgical relocates it. You can change what surrounds it: brow tail, lower-lid puffiness, sleep and head position for the camera. Those change how the eye reads, but the band for the tilt itself stays put.

Why does my canthal tilt look different in every photo?

Because the tilt is a small slope and the camera adds its own. Head roll, camera height and lens distance each shift the apparent line by more than anatomy varies between people. Shoot at eye level, head straight, lens at least an arm's length away, and the band will hold across scans.

Is a neutral canthal tilt bad?

No. Neutral is the ordinary case and reads balanced. Forums frame anything short of clearly positive as a loss, but the perception research reviewed in 2011 supports averageness and symmetry, not an upturned-eye rule. A neutral tilt on a rested, well-framed eye reads well.
