Palpebral fissure length
Palpebral fissure length is the horizontal length of the eye opening, from the inner corner to the outer corner. Forums pair it with canthal tilt to define hunter eyes. A single photo cannot give it in millimetres because lens distance and head angle change the apparent length, so BecomeTen reports eye length as a band. It is structural.

What is palpebral fissure length?
The palpebral fissure is the gap between the eyelids: the visible opening of the eye. Its length is the horizontal distance from the inner corner, the medial canthus, to the outer corner, the lateral canthus. Clinicians measure it with a ruler held to the face. Its height, the vertical opening, is a separate measurement and is what changes when someone is tired or squinting. Forums shorten the term to PFL and use it as a proxy for how long and narrow an eye looks.
Why do forums pair PFL with canthal tilt?
Because the hunter eyes ideal is a long, narrow eye that turns up at the outer corner. Length is the palpebral fissure; the upturn is canthal tilt. The forum recipe adds a low, straight brow and little visible upper lid, and rates any face against it. Nothing in the perception literature sets that combination as a target. What a photo can and cannot show
A photo can show whether an eye reads long or short relative to the face. It cannot give the length in millimetres, and any app that claims to has invented the number. There is nothing of known size in a selfie to scale against, lens distance changes how large the eye is compared with the nose, and a slight head turn foreshortens the far eye. Is palpebral fissure length workable or structural?
Structural. The two corners are anchored to the orbital rim by ligaments, and the distance between them is set by the skull. No exercise, tape, massage or routine lengthens it. What actually changes how eye length reads?
- Brow position. A low, heavy brow narrows the vertical opening and makes the eye read longer and more hooded; a high, open brow does the opposite. Grooming the brow decides more of this than the bone does.

- Sleep. A 2013 study that photographed the same people rested and after sleep deprivation found the tired faces were rated as having more hanging eyelids and more swollen eyes. The opening looks smaller; the corners have not moved.

Is a long palpebral fissure length the same as hunter eyes?
It is one ingredient of the forum recipe, not the whole thing. Hunter eyes also demand a positive tilt, a low brow and little lid on show. Why does my palpebral fissure length look shorter when I am tired?
Because the lids and the tissue around the corners swell and the upper lid drops, which crowds the opening. The 2013 sleep study found exactly that in rated photographs. The corners are still where they were. A rested scan, taken at eye level, shows the length you actually have.
