Hairstyles for a round face
A round face looks best with a hairstyle that adds length and takes width: height on top with shorter sides for men, and length past the chin with long layers and a deep side part for women. Avoid volume at the cheeks, blunt bobs that end at the chin and fringes cut straight across. Hair changes what the face reads as, not the bone.

The short version
- 1Confirm the shape with hair off the face. Take a straight-on photo at eye level with the hair pulled back and check whether the tool reads round or leans toward oval or square.
- 2Ask for height, not width. Tell the barber or stylist you want volume on top or at the crown, with the sides kept close at the cheekbones rather than puffed out.
- 3Move the parting off centre. Choose a deep side or off-centre parting and, if you want a fringe, a side-swept or curtain fringe rather than one cut straight across.
- 4Keep every end away from the cheeks. Make sure no blunt line finishes at the cheekbones or the chin. End the cut below the jaw or keep it short and lifted, then check it in a photo.
What a round face needs from a haircut
A round face is about as wide as it is long. The cheekbones are the widest point, the jaw is roughly as wide as the forehead, and the jaw line curves into the chin rather than turning a corner. A haircut can make it read longer and more defined by moving the outline of the head; it cannot move the cheekbones or the jaw.
The rule, taken from the combined hairstyle guide, is to add length and take width: put volume on top, keep it off the cheeks, and end any blunt line well away from the widest point. That rule is a barbering convention built on composition, not a research finding. There are no trials of haircuts by face shape.
| Part of the cut | Works on a round face | Works against it |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Height: a quiff, a lifted textured crop, crown volume, a high ponytail | Hair flat on top or combed forward and down |
| Sides | Short or close to the head; long hair kept flat at the cheeks | Volume, curls or a puffed shape at the cheekbones |
| Fringe | Side-swept, asymmetric, or a long curtain fringe that opens in the middle | A blunt fringe cut straight across |
| Parting | Deep side or off-centre | A dead-centre parting with flat sides |
| Where it ends | Below the jaw, ideally at the collarbone or lower | A blunt bob ending at the cheeks or chin |
How to tell whether your face is really round
The tool at the top of this page answers whether your face reads round, and if not, which shape it reads instead. Pull the hair back first, because a fringe or hair at the cheeks changes the outline it reads. Round is most often confused with two neighbours. An oval face is somewhat longer than it is wide, and if yours has visible length you have more options than this page suggests. A square face has the same near-equal length and width, but the jaw turns a corner instead of curving, and it wants texture and softened edges more than pure height.
Full cheeks can make a face look round when the bone outline is closer to oval. Treat any reading, from the tool or from a mirror, as a category, not a measurement. If it says your face sits between round and oval, the round advice still helps, only less strictly.
Round face hairstyles for men
Men have less length to work with, so height and the sides do most of the work:
- Textured quiff or pompadour. Real height at the front lengthens the face, and short sides keep the cheeks clear.
- Lifted textured crop. A crop that sits flat and forward reads round; the same crop with texture pushed up at the front works.
- Side part with a low fade. The off-centre parting adds a diagonal, and the fade keeps the sides tight without a hard line at the cheekbone.
- Faux hawk. Height through the centre lengthens the face without adding width.
Avoid a bowl cut or a forward fringe cut straight across, hair grown out evenly at the sides, and a uniform buzz cut, which leaves the outline of the head as round as the face. A beard kept tight at the cheeks and slightly longer at the chin adds length and a firmer lower edge. The detail is in beard styles for a round face.
Round face hairstyles for women
With more length available, the question is where the cut ends and where the volume sits. Long layers that begin below the chin, a deep side part and length at or below the collarbone are the safest base. A long bob works when it ends below the jaw and is angled slightly longer at the front, so the line runs downward rather than across.
- Long layers with a side part. Layers that start below the cheeks let the hair fall close to the face at its widest point.
- Curtain or side-swept fringe. It opens in the middle and adds diagonals; a full blunt fringe does the opposite.
- High ponytail or top knot. Lifting the hair adds height. Leave face-framing pieces that fall below the cheekbones.
- Pixie with height on top. A short cut can work if it is longer and textured at the crown and close at the sides; a rounded, helmet-shaped pixie does not.
Curly hair is not a problem on a round face, but the curl needs shaping so the widest part of the hair sits above or below the cheekbones rather than level with them.
Edge cases: thin hair, a receding front, glasses
Thin or fine hair. Height is harder to hold, so lean on the parting and the sides instead: a deep side part, a shorter cut that does not drag flat, and a light texturising product at the root.
A receding front. On a round face a higher hairline is less of a problem than on a long one, because the extra forehead adds length. Keep the top short and textured rather than combed forward over the gap. The Norwood scale explains how hairlines are described.
Glasses. Frames add a horizontal line at the eyes. Angular frames with a clear top line suit a round face, as glasses for a round face explains.

Questions
Can a man with a round face wear a buzz cut?
He can, but a uniform buzz cut leaves the outline of the head as round as the face, so it does nothing to lengthen it. Leaving the top a little longer than the sides adds some height, and a short beard shaped longer at the chin helps more than the cut does.
Is a fringe a good idea on a round face, or does it make the face look wider?
It depends on the fringe. A side-swept, curtain or asymmetric fringe adds a diagonal and lets the forehead show in the middle, which keeps length. A blunt fringe cut straight across draws a horizontal line and makes the face read shorter and wider.
What hair length suits a round face best for women?
Length past the chin, ideally around the collarbone or below, with layers starting under the cheekbones. Short cuts can work with height at the crown. The length to avoid is a blunt bob that ends level with the cheeks, where the face is widest, or at the chin, where it adds a horizontal line.
Does curly hair make a round face look rounder?
Only when the curls sit at the cheekbones and add width there. Shaped so the volume lands at the crown or below the jaw, curls suit a round face well. Ask for a dry cut so you and the stylist can see where the volume actually ends up.
