Hairstyles for a diamond face
A diamond face suits hairstyles that add width above and below the cheekbones: a fringe or forehead coverage at the top, chin-length or jaw-grazing layers at the bottom, and hair tucked behind one ear. Men do well with a textured fringe and fuller sides. Avoid slicked-back hair, tight sides and volume level with the cheekbones. Hair reframes them; it does not move them.

The short version
- 1Confirm the shape with the temples uncovered. Pull the hair back from the forehead and temples, take a straight-on photo and check whether the tool reads diamond or leans toward heart or oval.
- 2Add width at the forehead. Ask for a fringe or for hair left long enough to fall forward at the temples, rather than cut short or slicked back.
- 3Add width at the jaw. End the cut at or just below the jaw, or start layers there on long hair, so the narrow chin has company.
- 4Keep volume off the cheekbones. Make sure no curl, puff or blunt line sits level with the cheekbones, and tuck one side behind the ear if it does.
What a diamond face needs from a haircut
A diamond face has the cheekbones as its clearly widest point, with a narrower forehead above and a narrower jaw and pointed chin below. The outline comes to a soft point at the top and the bottom. It often reads as striking, because the cheekbones carry the face. The combined hairstyle guide frames the aim as softening that widest point by adding width where the face is narrow. Like every rule here, that is a styling convention, not a research result.
A diamond face needs two things at once: width at the forehead and width at the jaw. Styles that only handle one end leave the other point exposed.
| Zone | Adds balance | Sharpens the diamond |
|---|---|---|
| Forehead | A fringe, side-swept or full, or hair falling forward at the temples | Hair pulled tight back so the narrow forehead shows |
| Cheekbones | Hair lying close, or tucked behind one ear on one side | Volume, curls or a puff that starts and ends level with them |
| Jaw and chin | Layers, waves or ends that graze the jaw | Nothing at the jaw, leaving the narrow chin on its own |
| Top and sides | Moderate height, sides kept at medium length | Tall height with shaved or slicked sides |
How to tell whether your face is really diamond
The tool at the top of this page answers whether your face reads diamond, and if not, which shape it reads instead. Pull the hair back from the temples, since hair there fills out the forehead and can hide the shape. Diamond is most often confused with a heart face, which also has a narrow chin but a forehead about as wide as the cheekbones; a heart wants a fringe to narrow the top, a diamond wants one to widen it. It is also confused with an oval face, where the cheekbones are widest too but the forehead and jaw narrow only gently.
Low body fat can make cheekbones stand out and push a reading toward diamond, and fuller cheeks can pull it back to oval. Treat the reading as a category, not a measurement.
Diamond face hairstyles for men
- Textured fringe crop. A fringe brought forward fills the narrow forehead and takes attention off the cheekbones.
- Medium-length, messy cut. Hair over the ears and at the temples adds width above the cheekbones.
- Side-swept top with a low taper. Keep enough hair at the sides to cover the temples; skin there makes the cheekbones jut.
- Longer hair tucked behind the ears. It frames the jaw and adds some width at the bottom.
Skip the slicked-back undercut and the high skin fade with a tall top, which together narrow the forehead and stretch the face upward from the widest point. For the bottom of the diamond, a chin-focused full beard or a goatee fills a narrow chin while keeping the sides moderate; beard styles for a diamond face goes into that, and chin projection explains what the chin contributes in profile.
Diamond face hairstyles for women
- Side-swept or full fringe. Widens the forehead; a curtain fringe works if it falls toward the temples.
- Chin-length bob. Adds width below the cheekbones, at the narrow jaw.
- Layers that start at the jaw. For long hair, volume from the jaw down balances the cheekbones above.
- Hair tucked behind one ear. Breaks the symmetry at the cheekbones and shows one of them on purpose rather than both at once.
Avoid sleek, centre-parted hair pulled back hard, high buns that expose the narrow forehead, and curls or blow-dried volume concentrated level with the cheekbones, which widens the widest point further.
Edge cases: thin hair, receding temples, glasses
Thin hair. Width at the forehead and jaw is harder to build, so rely on a fringe for the top and a blunt-ish chin-length end for the bottom; blunt ends look thicker than layered ones on fine hair.
Receding temples. A diamond face already has a narrow forehead, and recession at the temples narrows it further. Leave hair long enough at the front to fall forward over the corners, and keep the sides from being clipped close at the temple.
Glasses. Frames with a strong brow line add width at the top where a diamond lacks it; glasses for a diamond face has the detail.

Questions
Does a diamond face suit a fringe haircut?
Yes, a fringe is one of the most useful things for this shape. It adds width at the narrow forehead and draws the eye above the cheekbones. Side-swept and full fringes both work; for men, a textured forward fringe does the same job.
Why do my cheekbones look wider with my hair slicked back?
Slicking back exposes the narrow forehead and temples, so the cheekbones become the only wide point in the outline. On a diamond face that sharpens the shape. Leaving some hair at the temples, or wearing a fringe, softens the contrast.
What short hairstyle works on a diamond-shaped face?
A textured crop with a forward fringe and medium-length sides for men, or a chin-length bob with a side-swept fringe for women. Both add width at the forehead and jaw. Short cuts with shaved temples and height on top work against it.
