Hairstyles for an oblong face
An oblong face suits hairstyles that take length and add width: a fringe of almost any kind, volume at the sides and cheekbones, and chin- to shoulder-length cuts. Men should keep the sides at medium length and skip the high fade with height on top. Avoid long straight centre-parted hair and slicked-back styles. The face reads shorter; the bone stays the same.

The short version
- 1Confirm the shape with the forehead uncovered. Pull any fringe back, take a straight-on photo and check whether the tool reads oblong or leans toward oval or square.
- 2Ask for a fringe. Choose a fringe that suits your hair: straight or curtain for women, a textured forward fringe or side-swept top for men.
- 3Keep width at the sides. Ask for medium-length sides rather than a high fade, and for layers or waves at the cheekbones if the hair is longer.
- 4Keep height and extreme length off. Skip tall quiffs, slicked-back tops and very long straight hair, and end longer cuts between the chin and the shoulders.
What an oblong face needs from a haircut
An oblong face, often called a long or rectangular face, is noticeably longer than it is wide, with a forehead, cheekbones and jaw of similar width, so the sides run fairly straight. The forehead is often high. The combined hairstyle guide puts the aim in two words: take length, add width. That is a framing convention used by barbers and stylists, not something tested in studies.
Two tools do most of the work. A fringe moves the visible top of the face down, which shortens it without changing anything else. Volume at the sides makes the face read wider at the cheekbones, which changes the ratio the eye estimates. Anything that adds height or pulls hair tight to the head does the opposite.
| Part of the cut | Shortens and widens | Lengthens |
|---|---|---|
| Top | Short to medium, worn forward or to the side | Height: a tall quiff, pompadour or crown volume |
| Sides | Medium length; waves or layers at the cheekbones | A high skin fade or hair pulled tight behind the ears |
| Fringe | Straight, curtain, textured or side-swept; almost any fringe | No fringe, with the whole forehead on show |
| Length | Chin to shoulder, with layers | Very long, straight hair with no layers |
| Parting | A low side parting | A sharp centre parting or slicked straight back |
How to tell whether your face is really oblong
The tool at the top of this page answers whether your face reads oblong, and if not, which shape it reads instead. Pull any fringe back first, because covering the forehead is exactly what hides an oblong reading. Oblong is most often confused with an oval face, which is also longer than wide but narrows from the cheekbones to a gently rounded chin; an oval has far more freedom with height. It is also confused with a square face, which has the same straight sides but a length close to its width.
A tall forehead or a long chin alone can push a reading toward oblong. Treat the result as a category, not a measurement, and if the tool says you sit between oval and oblong, take the oblong advice on height and the oval advice on everything else.
Oblong face hairstyles for men
This is the shape most men's charts get wrong. The popular cut of the moment, a high fade with a tall top, adds length at both ends of a face that already has plenty. Better options:
- Textured French crop. A short, forward fringe and medium sides shorten the forehead and keep some width.
- Side-swept fringe with a low taper. Hair falling across the forehead, sides left long enough to cover the temples.
- Medium-length, layered cut. Hair to the ears or a little longer, with movement at the sides, widens the face.
- Classic side part, worn low and loose. Keep the top short to medium and avoid lifting it at the front.
A beard on an oblong face should stay short at the chin and can be a little fuller at the cheeks, since length at the chin adds to the lower third. Beard styles for an oblong face goes through the options.
Oblong face hairstyles for women
An oblong face benefits more from a fringe than any other shape. A full straight fringe adds a strong horizontal; a curtain fringe does the same more softly and grows out easily.
- Shoulder-length cut with a fringe. The length stops before it can drag the face down, and the fringe shortens it from the top.
- Chin-length bob with volume. Width at the jaw and cheeks balances the length, the reverse of the round-face rule.
- Waves or curls from the cheekbones down. Volume where the face is narrowest relative to its length.
- Layered lob with a low side part. Layers at the sides keep the outline wide.
The look to avoid is very long, straight hair parted in the centre, which adds two vertical lines down the face. Sleek high ponytails and top knots lengthen too; a lower ponytail with some hair left at the sides is gentler.
Edge cases: a receding hairline, thin hair, glasses
A receding hairline. A receding front adds forehead to a face that is already long, so it matters more on this shape than any other. Use a fringe from the hair that remains, worn forward and textured, rather than slicking it back. If the front is too thin to cover, a short, even crop reads better than length combed over the gap. The stages are described on the Norwood scale, and the medication evidence is in minoxidil vs finasteride for the hairline.
Thin hair. Side volume is harder to hold, so lean on the fringe and on a shorter length that does not hang flat.
Glasses. Deeper frames with a strong top line break up the length; see glasses for an oblong face.

Questions
Is a high fade a bad haircut for an oblong face?
It works against the shape. A high fade removes width at the sides, and it usually comes with height on top, so the face reads longer at both ends. A low taper with medium sides and a forward or side-swept top suits an oblong face far better.
What fringe suits a long face with a high forehead?
Almost any fringe helps, because it lowers the visible top of the face. A full straight fringe gives the strongest effect; a curtain fringe is softer and easier to grow out. For men, a textured forward fringe in a short crop does the same job.
Should a man with an oblong face and a receding hairline slick his hair back?
Usually not. Slicking back shows the whole forehead plus the recession, which adds to the length the face already has. A short textured fringe from the remaining hair, or an even short crop if the front is thin, reads more balanced.
Does long straight hair make an oblong face look longer?
Yes, especially with a centre parting, because it frames the face in two vertical lines and adds no width. Layers, waves at the cheekbones and a fringe all counter it, as does taking the length up to between the chin and shoulders.
