Hairstyles for a heart-shaped face
A heart-shaped face suits hairstyles that add weight at or below the jaw and take attention off a wide forehead: chin-length bobs, side-swept fringes and layers from the cheekbones down. Men do well with a textured fringe and some length at the sides. Avoid volume at the crown or temples and slicked-back styles. Hair changes the balance, not the bone.

The short version
- 1Confirm the shape with the hairline visible. Pull the hair back, take a straight-on photo and check whether the tool reads heart or leans toward diamond or oval.
- 2Soften the forehead. Ask for a side-swept or curtain fringe, or a textured forward fringe for men, that covers part of the forehead.
- 3Move the weight down. Choose a length that ends at or below the chin, with layers or waves starting below the cheekbones rather than at the crown.
- 4Keep the crown and temples quiet. Skip big crown volume, slicked-back tops and high fades, all of which make the top of the face read wider.
What a heart-shaped face needs from a haircut
A heart-shaped face is widest at the forehead and upper cheekbones and narrows to a small, often pointed chin. The hairline sometimes dips in the centre, a widow's peak. The balance it needs, according to the combined hairstyle guide, is between a wide top and a narrow bottom: cover or soften part of the forehead, and put width at or below the jaw. That is a styling convention, not a finding from studies.
In practice this is the reverse of the round-face rule. Height and crown volume, which help a round face, make a heart face more top-heavy; weight at the jaw, which hurts a round face, is exactly what a heart face wants.
| Part of the cut | Balances a heart face | Makes it more top-heavy |
|---|---|---|
| Forehead | A side-swept or curtain fringe covering part of it | Everything pulled or slicked back to show it all |
| Crown and temples | Kept fairly flat, with modest height at most | Big crown volume, teased height, puffed temples |
| Jaw and chin | Weight, waves or flicked-out ends at or just below the jaw | Nothing at all, leaving the chin isolated |
| Length | Chin-length to shoulder-length, layered from the cheekbones down | Very short and tight all over, or long and flat at the bottom |
How to tell whether your face is really heart-shaped
The tool at the top of this page answers whether your face reads heart-shaped, and if not, which shape it reads instead. Pull the hair back so the full width of the forehead and the hairline are visible. A heart face is most often confused with a diamond face, which also has a narrow chin but a narrow forehead too, with the cheekbones clearly the widest point; a diamond wants forehead coverage for width rather than to narrow it. It is also confused with an oval face, which narrows more gently and has a rounded rather than pointed chin.
A full fringe or a wide hairline can push a reading toward heart. Treat the result as a category, not a measurement; a face that sits between heart and oval needs the heart advice only lightly.
Heart face hairstyles for men
- Textured fringe. A short, messy fringe brought forward takes width off the forehead without looking deliberate.
- Side-swept medium cut. Hair long enough to sweep across the forehead, with sides left at medium length rather than shaved.
- Longer, layered hair. Hair to the jaw adds weight where the face is narrow.
- Low taper rather than a high fade. A high fade narrows the bottom of the head and leaves the forehead looking wider still.
Avoid a tall quiff, a slicked-back undercut and very short cuts that leave the narrow chin on its own. The single biggest change for many men with this shape is a beard: a full beard or a rounded Garibaldi adds weight under a wider forehead. Beard styles for a heart-shaped face covers the options, and eyebrows, beard and the perceived jaw explains why it works.
Heart face hairstyles for women
Heart shapes are where the chin-length bob comes into its own. The same bob that doubles the width of a round face ends at the narrow chin of a heart face and fills it out.
- Chin-length or jaw-length bob. Ends that sit at or just below the chin add the missing width.
- Side-swept fringe. It covers one corner of the forehead and adds a diagonal toward the jaw.
- Lob with waves at the ends. Volume that starts below the cheekbones moves the visual weight down.
- Long layers starting at the cheekbones. For long hair, layers that flick out around the jaw keep it from hanging flat below a wide top.
Avoid high, sleek ponytails and buns that expose the full forehead, heavy volume at the crown, and short pixie cuts with no length at the sides.
Edge cases: a short face, a widow's peak, glasses
A heart face that is also short. The usual fringe can shorten the face too much. Choose a light, side-swept fringe instead of a full one, keep a little lift at the root, and take the length past the chin so it adds some vertical line.
A widow's peak. A centre point in the hairline exaggerates the heart outline when hair is pulled back. A side parting, or a fringe brushed across the peak, softens it. Brushing against the point fights the growth direction, so ask for the fringe to be cut with it.
Glasses. Frames that are wider or heavier at the bottom help balance a narrow chin; glasses for a heart-shaped face has the detail.

Questions
Is a chin-length bob a good haircut for a heart-shaped face?
Yes, it is one of the best. The ends sit at the narrow chin and add width exactly where the face lacks it. Keep the crown fairly flat and add a side-swept fringe if the forehead is broad, and the bob balances the whole outline.
Should men with a heart-shaped face avoid short hairstyles?
Not all of them. A short textured crop with a forward fringe works because it covers part of the forehead. The short cuts to avoid are tall quiffs and high fades, which add height and take width off the bottom of the head.
How should I style a fringe over a widow's peak?
Cut the fringe to follow the growth direction of the peak, usually swept to one side, rather than forcing it straight down. A side parting placed off the point also helps, and a fringe left a little longer lies flatter than a short one.
