Beard style for your face shape
This beard tool finds your face shape from one photo, in your browser, and measures your jaw against your cheekbones and your chin against your jaw. It suggests the beard styles that usually suit that shape and gives a keep-or-shave hint: a beard adds structure to a narrow jaw, and hides a strong one. Nothing is uploaded.

How a beard changes your face shape
A beard is the one change that redraws the lower outline of a man's face in a few weeks. Length at the chin makes the face longer; width at the sides makes it wider; a defined neckline and cheek line add the edges a soft jaw lacks. That is why the same beard can flatter one face and fight another, and why barbers start from face shape. The face shape detector reads the outline on its own; this page adds the beard advice.
| Face shape | What to do | Styles |
|---|---|---|
| Oval | Keep the balance | Short boxed beard, heavy stubble, most styles |
| Round | Add length, keep cheeks short | Goatee, Van Dyke, boxed beard ending in a point |
| Square | Round the corners | Circle beard, short full beard, fuller chin |
| Oblong | Add width, keep the chin short | Short boxed beard, fuller sideburns |
| Heart | Add weight low | Full beard, rounded Garibaldi |
| Diamond | Fill the chin, moderate sides | Chin-focused full beard, goatee |
Should I keep my beard or shave?
Look at what the beard is covering. If your jaw is narrow against your cheekbones or your chin is small against your jaw, a beard adds the width and projection the bone does not, and most men with that structure look better with one. If your jaw is wide and your chin full, a long beard hides a feature worth showing, and stubble or a clean shave often reads stronger. The tool measures both ratios against real frontal photos and gives the hint that follows from them.
The research on facial hair and attractiveness is mixed and depends on the viewer and the fashion of the moment: in several studies heavy stubble was rated most attractive, full beards were rated more masculine and mature, and clean-shaven faces younger. There is no single best answer, which is why the tool gives a hint rather than a verdict. The eyebrows, beard and the perceived jaw article covers where the neckline and cheek line should sit.
How to take the photo
- Shorter is better for the reading. A long or full beard is read as part of your outline, so the tool describes the face your beard makes. For the face underneath, use a photo from when you were shaved or had stubble.
- Camera at eye level, chin level. A lowered chin hides the jaw; a raised one stretches it.
- Straight on, arm's length. A close lens widens the centre and narrows the jaw.
- Even front light. Shadow under the jaw can read as more definition than there is.
Beard grooming that works on any face
Whatever the style, three details decide how a beard reads. The neckline sits about a finger's width above the Adam's apple, following the crease under the jaw; set too high it cuts the jaw off, too low it merges with the neck. The cheek line should look natural, trimmed only of stray hairs, not shaved into a hard line high on the cheek. And patchy growth reads better kept short and even than grown long and uneven. Body fat under the jaw matters as much as the beard: a leaner face shows the jaw line the beard is meant to frame.

Questions
What beard style suits a round face?
One that adds length and keeps the cheeks short: a goatee, a Van Dyke, or a short boxed beard that ends in a point at the chin. Full, rounded beards with bushy sides repeat the roundness and make the face read wider. Keep the neckline defined so the jaw has an edge.
Does a beard make your jaw look stronger?
Usually, if it is shaped well. A beard adds width at the jaw angles and projection at the chin, and a clean neckline creates an edge that a soft jaw does not have. It cannot change the bone, and on a jaw that is already wide and angular a long beard can hide more than it adds.
Can the tool read my face shape if I already have a beard?
It reads the outline it sees, so with a full beard it describes the face your beard makes, which is useful for judging the current style. To see the face underneath, use a photo from when you were clean-shaven or had short stubble, and compare the two results.
