Beard styles for an oblong or long face
On an oblong face, keep width on the sides and the chin short. A short boxed beard or fuller sideburns makes a long face read wider and shorter. Avoid a long chin beard, a goatee on its own or a pointed Van Dyke, which all add length where the face already has plenty. The beard changes the outline, not the bone.

The short version
- 1Confirm the face reads oblong. Run the face shape detector on a photo with stubble or a clean shave, since a long beard makes any face read longer.
- 2Choose width over length. Pick a short boxed beard, fuller sideburns joined to a short beard, or heavy stubble with full sides, and keep the chin no longer than the sides.
- 3Leave the cheek line high. Keep the cheek line at or near its natural height so the beard keeps width across the cheeks where a long face needs it.
- 4Set a firm neckline. Shave below a line about a finger's width above the Adam's apple so the neck does not add to the visible length of the face.
Why the usual beard advice backfires on a long face
An oblong face is noticeably longer than it is wide, with the forehead, cheekbones and jaw at similar widths and often a high forehead. The lower third tends to be long as well. Most popular beard styles add length at the chin, which is exactly what this shape does not need. The goatee and Van Dyke that work on a round face make an oblong face longer still.
The aim is the opposite: build width at the cheeks and the jaw angles, keep the chin no longer than the sides, and let the beard end close to the jaw. That makes the face read broader and the lower third shorter, which brings it toward an oval. The beard style tool gives the same advice for an oblong reading. This is barbering convention, not research; nobody has run trials of beard styles by face shape.
Beard styles that widen an oblong face
- Short boxed beard. Even, dense, with the sides about as long as the chin and a flat or gently rounded bottom. The most reliable choice, because it adds width at the jaw without adding length.
- Fuller sideburns into a short beard. Keeping the sideburns full and joining them to a short beard puts hair at the widest horizontal line of the face.
- Heavy stubble with full sides. Shadow across the whole jaw and cheeks; it widens the lower face slightly and adds no length at all.
- Short full beard with a horizontal moustache. A moustache that reaches toward the corners of the mouth adds another horizontal line across a long face.
| Style | Why it works against an oblong face |
|---|---|
| Goatee on its own | Hair only on the vertical centre line, which reads as length |
| Van Dyke or pointed beard | The point extends the chin downward |
| Long beard of any kind | Adds directly to a lower third that is already long |
| Very short sides with a long chin | Narrows the jaw and lengthens it at once |
Cheek line and neckline for a long face
Keep the cheek line at its natural height or close to it. Taking it low, as you would on a round face, removes width from exactly the place an oblong face needs it. Clean up the strays and leave the line soft.
The neckline matters more than usual, because a neckline set too low adds the neck to the visible length of the face. Set it about a finger's width above the Adam's apple, along the crease under the mandible, and keep it firm. A clear horizontal line at the base of the beard is one more horizontal across a long face. How the neckline and the brows set the perceived jaw is covered in eyebrows, beard and the perceived jaw.
Stubble, a beard or clean-shaven on an oblong face
Oblong faces often have a jaw that is not much narrower than the cheekbones, so the jaw itself may read typical or wide. The tool decides from your photo. If your jaw reads narrower than typical, a beard would add structure, because it adds width and definition the bone does not. If your jaw reads wider and your chin fuller than typical, clean-shaven or stubble suits you too, and a long beard would hide that. If both read close to typical, beard or no beard both work.
Between stubble and a beard, the short boxed beard usually does more for a long face, since stubble adds shadow but little width. Clean-shaven is a fine choice when the jaw is strong, but it gives up the one tool that widens the lower face.

Thin sides, a receding hairline and other edge cases
Patchy growth hits oblong faces hardest, because the cheeks and sideburns are where the shape needs hair and where growth is most often thin. Keep the whole beard at the length the thinnest area can carry, so the sides do not look sparse beside a denser chin. If only the chin grows well, heavy stubble kept even is a better choice than a chin beard, which would add the length you want to avoid.
A receding hairline lengthens an oblong face from the top as well. The hairstyles for an oblong face guide covers a fringe from what remains; on the beard side, keep the chin especially short so the face is not lengthened at both ends. The Norwood scale describes the stages of recession. An oblong face that is also angular sits near square; rounding the jaw corners slightly helps there. Frames can add width at eye level too, and the glasses for an oblong face guide lists which.
Questions
Is a goatee a bad beard choice for a long face?
Usually, yes. A goatee puts all the hair on the vertical centre of the face, which reads as length, and a long face already has plenty. A short boxed beard or full stubble with the sides kept as full as the chin does more for an oblong shape.
How long should a beard be on an oblong face?
Short, and about the same length on the sides as on the chin. The beard should end close to the jaw rather than below it. Once the chin grows noticeably longer than the sides, the beard starts adding to the length of the face instead of its width.
What beard suits a long face when the cheeks grow patchy?
Heavy stubble kept even across the whole face, or a short boxed beard at the length the thinnest area can manage. Avoid compensating with a longer chin beard, because the chin is where an oblong face least needs length.
