Answer · Jaw & chin
Can your chin change shape?
The chin bone changes while you are growing, into the late teens or early twenties, and after that only slowly with age and tooth loss. No exercise, mewing or device reshapes it. What does change, often a lot, is how the chin looks: fat under it, posture, a beard and camera angle can each move it from weak to defined.
The outline and balance of the lower face.
Explore jaw & chinWhen the bone changes
The chin is the front of the mandible. The lower jaw is one of the last parts of the face to finish growing, which is why many teenagers see their chin and jaw firm up late, partly under the influence of puberty hormones covered in does testosterone make your jaw bigger. Once growth ends, the bone is structural. Later in life the bone and the soft tissue over it change with age, and tooth loss can alter the lower face, but that is slow and not something a routine steers.
What changes how the chin looks
- Fat under the chin. Submental fat blurs the line between chin and neck, so an ordinary chin reads recessed. It falls with overall body fat, not with spot exercises.
- Posture. Head forward and chin down folds the tissue under the jaw and tucks the chin back. Head level, ears over shoulders, and the same chin reads a full band stronger.
- Beard. A beard with a firm lower edge, kept slightly fuller at the chin, adds apparent projection. The beard style tool suggests shapes by face shape.
- Camera and light. A lens above eye level shortens the chin; light from slightly above puts a shadow under its edge and defines it.
How to check yours
Chin projection is a profile trait, so compare side photos taken the same way each time: eye level, head level, relaxed mouth. The chin projection entry explains what a photo can and cannot show, and what a weak jawline looks like covers the rest of the lower face. For a front-on baseline, the free jawline test reads the jaw outline from one photo.
