Answer · Jaw & chin
What does a weak jawline look like?
A weak jawline is one where the lower edge of the face does not separate from the neck: no clear corner below the ear, a jaw that slopes or tapers toward a small chin, and in profile a chin sitting behind the lips. Often the bone is ordinary and fat, posture or the camera is hiding it.
The outline and balance of the lower face.
Explore jaw & chinThe visible signs
- No corner. The jaw slopes from the ear into the neck without a visible turn at the gonial angle.
- Blurred edge. The line under the jaw is soft, and the chin and neck read as one shape.
- Narrow lower face. The jaw is much narrower than the cheekbones, so the face tapers to a point.
- Recessed chin. In profile the chin sits well behind the lips, described at chin projection.
Few faces show all four. One or two are common, and most people only notice them in photos taken from below or close up.
Bone, fat or the photo?
The same signs come from three different causes, and only one of them is fixed. Bone is structural: a short ramus, an open angle or a small chin were set by growth, and the gonial angle is largely genetic. Fat is workable: submental fat under the chin and fat along the jaw fill the corner and erase the edge whatever the bone is. The photo is the cheapest cause to rule out: a lens below the chin, a head pushed forward or overhead light all make a jaw read weaker than it is.
A practical test: take a photo at eye level, arm's length or further, head level, mouth relaxed. If the corner shows there and not in your usual selfies, it was the camera. If it is still soft and you have fat to lose, lower body fat gradually over a few weeks and compare again under the same conditions. A corner that appears was fat; one that holds is bone.
What to do about it
Start with what moves: body fat, posture, a beard shaped to draw an edge, and honest photos. How to make your jawline show goes through them in order. Skip jaw trainers and mewing for bone change; neither moves an adult mandible, and BecomeTen does not recommend surgery. The free jawline test gives you a baseline band to compare against later.
