What face shape do curtain bangs suit?
Curtain bangs suit almost every face shape, which is why they are the safe choice of fringe. They part in the middle and fall to the sides, so they add soft diagonals instead of a hard line. Oval, oblong, heart, square and round faces all suit them; on a diamond face, let them fall toward the temples. This is styling convention, not research.
How to adjust them by face shape
- Oval. Frames the eyes and cheekbones without shortening the face much. Wear them at any length.
- Oblong. Lowers the visible top of the face more softly than a straight fringe, and grows out easily. Pair with width at the cheekbones.
- Heart. Covers part of a wide forehead and draws the eye down toward the jaw. Keep the crown fairly flat.
- Square. Breaks the line of a broad forehead. Ask for soft, broken ends rather than a blunt edge.
- Round. Choose a long curtain fringe that opens in the middle and falls below the cheekbones, so it adds length rather than width.
- Diamond. Let them fall toward the temples to add width at a narrow forehead; keep volume off the cheekbones.
Each row comes from the per-shape guides, such as the round face guide and the heart face guide. The common rule: put volume where the face is narrow, not at its widest point.
Why they work on so many shapes
A blunt fringe cut straight across adds a strong horizontal, which helps a long face and hurts a round one. Curtain bangs show a strip of forehead in the middle and angle outward, so they shorten the face a little without the hard line. They also frame the eye area and cheekbones, which most faces gain from. That flexibility is why they appear in the advice for every shape, while other fringes suit only some; the hairstyle by face shape guide has the full chart.
Before you cut
Check your shape with the free face shape tool, hair pulled back so an existing fringe does not hide the forehead. Curtain bangs need some length to sit well, so they suit hair at or below the chin better than a very short crop. For the full comparison with other fringes, see what face shape should get bangs.
