Answer · Framing
What face shape should get bangs?
Oblong faces gain the most from bangs, because a fringe lowers the visible top of the face and shortens it. Heart and diamond faces benefit too, and oval faces suit most fringes. Square faces want a soft, side-swept fringe, and round faces should skip a blunt one cut straight across. This is styling convention, not research.
Which bangs for which face shape
| Face shape | Bangs? | Best type |
|---|---|---|
| Oblong | Yes, the most | Almost any: straight, curtain, textured or side-swept |
| Heart | Yes | Side-swept or curtain, covering part of a wide forehead |
| Diamond | Yes | Side-swept or full, to add width at a narrow forehead |
| Oval | Most work | Any, but avoid a heavy low fringe on a short oval |
| Square | Soft ones | Side-swept, wispy or curtain, with broken ends |
| Round | With care | Side-swept, asymmetric or a long curtain fringe; not blunt |
Bangs is the American word for what British stylists call a fringe. The advice is the same either way, and it matches the hairstyle by face shape guide.
Why a fringe works
A fringe is the only part of a haircut that shortens a face without changing anything else, because it moves the visible top of the face down. That is why it helps long faces most. The type matters as much as the length: a straight fringe adds a horizontal line, which suits an oblong face and makes a round one read wider; a side-swept fringe adds a diagonal, which softens square and heart faces. A fringe also shortens the upper of the facial thirds, which is useful on a high forehead.
Before you cut
- Check the shape. Run the free face shape tool with hair pulled back. A fringe already in place hides the forehead and can skew the reading.
- Consider your hair. Strong cowlicks, a widow's peak and very curly hair change how a fringe falls; ask for it to be cut with the growth direction.
- Start soft. If unsure, curtain bangs suit almost every face shape and grow out easily.
If you want the opposite, no framing at all, what face shape should get a buzz cut covers which faces carry it. The oblong face guide has the most fringe options of any shape.
