Facial fifths

Facial fifths split the face horizontally into five bands, each nominally one eye-width wide: ear to outer eye corner, the eye, the gap between the eyes, the other eye, and the far side. The rule mainly describes eye spacing. It is structural. A phone selfie at arm's length distorts it. BecomeTen reports a directional band.

What are facial fifths?

Take the width of one eye and lay it across the face five times. In the classical canon the face is exactly five eyes wide: the outer fifths run from the edge of the face to each outer corner, the second and fourth fifths are the eyes, and the middle fifth is the gap between the inner corners. In practice the rule describes how far apart the eyes sit and how wide the face is beside them. Less than a fifth of gap reads close-set; more reads wide-set. BecomeTen reports fifths under harmony and eye spacing under the eye area, both as bands.

What a photo can and cannot show

This is the trait a phone ruins most. A selfie at arm's length puts a short focal length close to the face, and a close lens enlarges whatever is nearest to it. The nose and the space between the eyes are nearer than the ears and temples, so the middle fifths grow and the outer fifths shrink: the midface widens and the eyes appear more spaced than they do across a room. BecomeTen grades the capture and reports eye spacing as closer, balanced or wider, never as a fraction of face width.

Are facial fifths workable or structural?

Structural. The distance between the eye sockets and the width of the cheekbones are skull. The plan will not touch them and the potential image may not narrow or widen the face. Harmony carries the smallest potential ceiling of the five areas because of traits like this one.

What actually changes how the fifths read?

  • Lens distance. Arm's length widens the midface. Step back or hand the phone over.
  • Hair. Hair over the temples hides the outer fifths and makes the eyes read further apart relative to the visible face.
  • Brows. Brow hair that runs toward the bridge shortens the visible gap between the eyes; a wide gap between the brows lengthens it. Brow shaping has no studies, but it is real and cheap.
  • Head turn. A slight yaw hides one outer fifth and shortens the far eye.

Questions

Are close-set or wide-set eyes rated lower?

Only when the spacing is clearly out of balance with the rest of the face, and even then it is one trait among many. A moderately close-set pair on a narrow face reads coherent; the same spacing on a wide face reads crowded. BecomeTen rates the relationship, reports a band and flags it structural.

How far should the camera be to judge eye spacing?

Further than your arm. The distortion drops quickly with distance, so a photo taken by someone else from a couple of metres, or with the phone's zoom rather than the wide lens, shows the proportion as people see it. Keep the face straight-on and at eye level. The capture grade tells you if the lens was too close.

Is the five-equal-fifths rule based on research?

No. It is a proportion canon inherited from drawing and later adopted by facial analysis. The research base for attractiveness supports symmetry, averageness and sex-typical features; it does not test the fifths as a rule. BecomeTen uses fifths to describe spacing and left-right balance, and says so.
