fWHR: facial width-to-height ratio
fWHR is facial width-to-height ratio: the width between the cheekbones divided by the height from upper lip to brow. A higher ratio means a wider, shorter-looking midface. It is set by the zygomatic bones and is structural, though body fat changes apparent width. BecomeTen reports a directional band: wider, balanced or narrower, never a ratio value.

What is fWHR?
Facial width-to-height ratio takes the widest span of the face, cheekbone to cheekbone, and divides it by the vertical distance from the top of the upper lip to the brow line. A wide, short midface gives a high ratio; a narrow, tall one a low ratio. It became a research variable in the 2000s and forum shorthand for "wide face good" soon after. In the report it is one of eight harmony traits, next to the facial fifths and the midface ratio.
What does the research actually support?
Less than the forums claim. The BecomeTen evidence library has no fWHR entry, so the report cites nothing for it and says so. Elsewhere the ratio has mostly been studied as a cue to perceived dominance rather than attractiveness, with uneven replication. It has never been established as a rule of beauty.
What a photo can and cannot show
A straight-on photo at eye level shows whether the midface reads wide or narrow relative to its height. It does not yield a ratio. A close lens shrinks the cheeks and ears relative to the nose; hair at the sides adds width the bone does not have; a lowered brow shortens the height leg. Is fWHR workable or structural?
Structural, with one soft-tissue asterisk. The width leg is set by the zygomatic arches and the height leg by the maxilla and brow, none of which move without surgery. The asterisk is fat: cheek fullness adds real width over the arches, so apparent fWHR rises and falls with body fat. The bone band is tagged structural; the fat belongs to the composition steps in the plan.
What actually changes how fWHR reads?
- Body fat. The largest lever; it directly widens the face at the cheeks. See body fat percentage and facial definition.
- Hair at the sides. Volume over the temples and ears reads as width. A tight side removes it.
- Brow position. Low brows shorten the height leg and raise the apparent ratio. A raised brow does the reverse.
- Lens distance. Arm's-length selfies narrow the outer face. Shoot from further away.
Questions
Is a high fWHR attractive?
Not by itself. The research that exists links a higher ratio more to perceived dominance than to attractiveness, and results have not replicated cleanly. What holds up is that a wide midface can read as more masculine, a sex-typical cue the literature supports. BecomeTen rates fWHR as one harmony trait, not a target.
Does losing fat lower my fWHR?
It lowers the apparent ratio, because cheek fat sits over the widest part of the face and reads as width. The bone ratio is unchanged. Whether that helps depends on the rest of the face: a wide bone structure gains definition, a narrow one can read gaunt. The report says which way the band would move.
Is fWHR the same as having wide cheekbones?
Not quite. Wide cheekbones raise the width leg, but fWHR also depends on midface height, so a wide face that is also tall can have an ordinary ratio. Cheekbones are rated as their own harmony trait, about projection and light rather than width. fWHR is the proportion; cheekbones help set it.
