Facial symmetry

Facial symmetry is how closely the left and right halves of a face mirror each other. Every face is somewhat asymmetric, and perception studies find symmetry matters alongside averageness rather than on its own. A photo can show a direction of imbalance, not a percentage, so BecomeTen reports symmetry as a band, never a decimal.

What is facial symmetry?

Fold a face down the midline and compare the halves. Facial symmetry is how well they match: eye height, brow height, cheek width, where the corners of the mouth sit, which way the chin leans. Nobody matches perfectly. One eye sits a touch higher, one nostril is wider, the jaw drifts a little to one side, one brow arches more. That is the ordinary state of a human face, not a defect. What did the perception research find?

A 1994 study in the Journal of Comparative Psychology measured symmetry and averageness in photographed faces and related both to attractiveness ratings. Both mattered. The 2011 review in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B went through the later work and reached a more careful position: symmetry has a real but modest effect on ratings, averageness has a stronger one, and the two overlap because a face close to the population average is usually fairly symmetric anyway.

What a photo can and cannot show

A photo can show which way a face leans: whether the jaw sits left of the nose line, whether one eye is visibly higher. It cannot give a symmetry percentage with a decimal point. Free symmetry calculators produce numbers like that by placing a few dozen landmarks on one image and comparing distances, and every step adds noise. Turn the head a little and the near side grows; hold the phone close and the lens stretches whatever is nearest; change the light and one cheek's edge moves. Two calculators on the same photo disagree. BecomeTen therefore reports a band, balanced, slight lean or noticeable lean, with a capture grade beside it, as the methodology requires for every structural trait. A decimal would be reporting camera noise as anatomy.

Is facial symmetry workable or structural?

Mostly structural. Where the orbits, cheekbones and jaw sit is bone, and nothing non-surgical relocates bone. BecomeTen tags the underlying symmetry structural, the plan never promises to even out a jaw, and the potential image is forbidden from redrawing it. What is workable is the soft-tissue layer and the presentation: brows, hair, swelling, expression and how the photo is taken. Those can honestly move a face into the neighbouring band, because soft tissue was the part reading lopsided.

What actually changes how facial symmetry reads?

Head posture and camera. A head turned or rolled a few degrees makes one side larger. Face the lens square, chin level, lens at eye height and at least an arm's length away.
Lighting. A window on one side shadows one cheek, and the shadowed edge reads narrower. Flat, frontal light shows the face as it is. See photo quality, light, angle and lens.
Expression and swelling. Most people smile more on one side, and short sleep, salt or allergies puff one side more than the other. A neutral, rested face is the fairest test.
Hair parting and brows. A deep side parting and a brow groomed higher on one side both pull the apparent midline. A centre parting and matched brows are the cheapest levers on this page.

Is perfect facial symmetry possible?

No, and it is not the target. Every face measured in the perception studies was asymmetric to some degree, and faces made perfectly symmetric by mirroring one half look wrong to raters. A face that lands in the balanced band with ordinary small differences is already at the level the research rewards.

Why does my facial symmetry score differ between two apps?

Because both are guessing from landmarks on one photo, and the landmarks land differently on every image. Head turn, lens distance and lighting each shift the halves by more than most people's real asymmetry. BecomeTen gives a band and a capture grade instead of a decimal, and the band holds across well-taken photos.

Does a hair parting change facial symmetry?

It changes how symmetry reads, not the bone underneath. A deep side parting drags the visual midline toward it and makes the opposite side look wider, and a raised brow on one side does the same. A centre parting and evenly groomed brows are the cheapest way to let the face read as balanced as it is.
