Nasal projection

Nasal projection is how far the tip of the nose stands out from the face, judged in profile against the depth of the face behind it. It is cartilage and bone, fully structural, and the trait a phone selfie exaggerates most, because a close lens enlarges whatever is nearest. BecomeTen reports it as a band and never recommends rhinoplasty.

What is nasal projection?

Projection is the forward distance from the face to the tip of the nose, seen from the side. Surgeons relate it to the length of the nose and the depth of the face; forums shorten all of that to whether a nose is big. It is set by the nasal bones at the top, the septal and tip cartilages lower down, and how far forward the maxilla sits beneath them. None of that is soft tissue, which is why the nose is one of the least workable traits on the face.

Forums judge noses harshly because the nose is in the middle of every photo and because a phone camera makes it larger than it is. The result is a lot of people convinced their nose is their problem on the strength of a selfie that would have enlarged anyone's.

What a photo can and cannot show

A frontal photo cannot show projection at all; only a profile can, and BecomeTen rates from a frontal image. The front view shows the width of the nose and how it sits between the eyes and the mouth, which is enough for a directional band on nose harmony and nothing more. The bigger issue is the lens.

At arm's length a phone camera is close enough that the nose tip is noticeably nearer the lens than the ears and cheeks. Nearer things are rendered larger, so the nose grows relative to the rest of the face and the sides shrink behind it. Step back and use the zoom, or have someone take the photo from a few metres away, and the same nose returns to its real proportion. This is perspective, not the model's opinion, and it is why photo distance and lens sit under every trait on the report. If the nose looks different in the two photos, the difference is the lens, and the far one is honest.

Is nasal projection workable or structural?

Fully structural. Bone and cartilage do not respond to exercise, tape, clips, massage or posture, and BecomeTen tags the trait structural, keeps it out of the plan and forbids the potential image from redrawing it. Rhinoplasty exists and is common; BecomeTen does not recommend it at any tier. A report that suggested it would be practising medicine from a selfie.

What actually changes how nasal projection reads?

Camera distance. The single biggest factor. Further away with zoom, or a rear camera held by someone else, removes the enlargement.
Lighting. Hard light from above throws a long shadow under the tip and the nose reads taller. Soft, even, frontal light shortens it. Neither changes the cartilage.
Hairstyle framing. Hair with height or width at the sides rebalances the face around the nose; a very tight cut on a narrow face leaves the nose the only wide thing in the frame. See glasses, hairstyle and framing.
Brows. Fuller, defined brows give the eye a second horizontal feature to rest on. Sparse brows leave the nose to dominate the middle of the face.

Does the front camera exaggerate nasal projection?

Yes, and it is distance rather than the camera itself. At arm's length the nose tip is much closer to the lens than the ears, and closer objects are rendered larger, so the nose grows and the sides of the face shrink. A rear camera held by someone else a few metres away, or zoom from that distance, shows the real proportion.

Is there an ideal nasal projection in the attractiveness research?

No. The studies that hold up, including a 1994 experiment on averageness and symmetry and a 2011 review of the field, find that faces near the population average and more symmetrical are rated higher. Neither reports a nose-size rule. A nose in proportion to its face reads well; a small nose on a face built for a larger one does not.

Why is nasal projection tagged structural when I have seen nose-shaping clips?

Because the nose is bone at the top and firm cartilage below, and neither responds to pressure from a clip, tape or massage. Clips flatten skin for a few minutes and can bruise it. BecomeTen tags the trait structural, keeps it out of the plan, and forbids the potential image from reshaping it.

How much of a nasal projection score is really lighting?

More than most people expect. Hard light from above lengthens the shadow under the tip, which reads as a taller nose, and side light exaggerates any deviation in the bridge. Even frontal light does neither. The band is a snapshot of the photo, and the capture grade beside it tells you how much to trust it.
